As part of the 2024 edition of the Hotel Warszawa Art Fair, we are pleased to show works by Katarzyna Korzeniecka, Anna Orłowska and Scott Young. The presentation brings together artists working across diverse media, creating a layered dialogue that explores the intersections of luxury and materiality across time, within the evocative setting of the hotel.

Katarzyna Korzeniecka’s works revive the historic marquetry and ebru techniques, traditionally linked to the decorative arts. Her marquetry pieces, crafted from wood—a material deeply tied to the earth—symbolize cosmic structures, serving as meditations on the relationship between the earthly and celestial realms. Historically, marquetry was a luxury afforded only by the wealthy. Similarly, Korzeniecka’s use of the ebru technique, originating in the Middle East and Turkey and used by royal dynasties from the 15th century, evokes an opulent past.

Anna Orłowska’s photographs capture the preserved interior elements of the 18th-century Uphagen merchant house in Gdańsk. Each room in the historic building features elaborate Rococo motifs, rich in flora and fauna, reflecting the era’s fascination with natural beauty and ornamentation.

The room is structured as an immersive installation, guiding the viewer through different eras of luxury and materiality. Scott Young’s paintings explore the emotional and material intersections of the hotel experience. His depictions of mundane objects associated with hotel stays hint at the unseen emotional narratives unfolding within these transient, yet indulgent, environments, while his paintings featuring characters from the 1980s American soap opera Dynasty connect the room to modern day ideas of prosperity.
